Successful applicants show sustained engagement in one or two areas (e.g., debate, Model UN, research, state-level policy work, sustained entrepreneurship) with measurable leadership or outcomes, not a long list of superficial activities. Compared with peers UVA is stricter on academic fit and demonstrated civic engagement for in-state applicants and more flexible on test scores and extracurricular breadth for OOS applicants who bring exceptional regional or disciplinary distinction.
Treat the Why UVA prompt as evidence, not praise: cite specific faculty, courses, research centers, or the McIntire curriculum and explain how you will use them in a four-year plan (examples: a Prof. X lab, the Batten School policy projects, McIntire’s integrated core). Mention the Honor System or the residential and Grounds traditions only if you connect them to your own values or intended contributions, and keep answers concrete - link a past project to a precise UVA resource and one tangible outcome you hope to achieve there.
