What UVA weights most

UVA weights demonstrated intellectual engagement with public service, policy, and civic leadership—this isn't a school that rewards pure achievement for its own sake. They're notably strict on the honor code alignment (they'll screen for integrity signals) and favor applicants with clear institutional fit to either McIntire's business curriculum or their strong political science/international affairs pipeline; apply here if you genuinely care about governance or commerce, not just prestige. Compared to peer flagships, they're slightly more numbers-conscious on GPA (the 3.85 floor is real) but more forgiving on extracurriculars if your ECs tell a coherent story about leadership in civic/institutional contexts.

Supplemental essay strategy

Use the "Why UVA" essay to connect specifically to McIntire's integrated curriculum or name particular faculty/research centers (Weldon Cooper Center, Miller Center for Public Affairs) that align with your intellectual trajectory—generic "great school" responses tank here. The honor code prompt (if included) is a genuine values test: don't perform ethics, instead narrate a specific moment where you made a costly decision aligned with integrity, ideally one that shows how you'd contribute to UVA's community rather than just comply with rules.

Where to focus next

If you only have time for one thing this month, do this:

  1. Read 2 admitted-student essays from UVA (search official admissions site or Reddit r/uva). Notice the level of specificity — that's the bar.
  2. Write the ‘why this school’ supplement first, before anything else. If you can't fill 250 words with school-specific reasons, pick a different school.
  3. Find one current student to ask about their experience — admissions offices often connect prospective applicants with current students. The follow-up email becomes specific essay material.
