ED rate (13.7%) is materially higher than RD (6.0%). If Rice is your top choice and you can commit financially, this is the highest-leverage round.
Rice prioritizes intellectual curiosity within a collaborative, residential-college community. Successful applicants show deep, sustained engagement in one or two academic or creative pursuits (research, engineering projects, studio art, competitive music) rather than broad, shallow involvement, and they convey fit for small-team classrooms and close faculty mentorship. Rice is stricter than many peers on demonstrated passion and evidence of initiative (research outputs, leadership in technical/arts projects), but a bit more forgiving on perfect course overloads if you show clear focus and contribution.
For Rice supplements, be specific about how you will use the residential college system, named faculty, or unique labs/studios - cite a professor, the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen, Shepherd School ensembles, or architecture design-build opportunities, and link them to a concrete project you want to pursue. Use the short prompts to show community fit: describe one or two particular colleges, traditions, or multidisciplinary facilities you would join, and replace vague praise with a brief plan or past example that proves you will actively contribute.
