What Pomona weights most

Pomona favors intellectually adventurous students who will take advantage of the Claremont Colleges consortium and cross-disciplinary study. They weight depth and curiosity in one or two academic areas, research or creative work, and clear evidence of initiative in community or projects, more than broad extracurricular breadth. They are stricter on academic rigor and sustained engagement than many LAC peers, but more flexible on standardized tests for applicants with outstanding academic context and curricular challenge.

Supplemental essay strategy

For the "Why Pomona" and program-specific prompts, cite concrete resources from Pomona and the 7-college consortium: specific professors, labs, intercollegiate classes, research centers, or clubs you intend to use and why those options could not be replicated at another LAC. Show familiarity with Claremont cross-registration, a particular seminar or research group, and a clear plan for how you will link those offerings to an existing project or academic interest.

Where to focus next

If you only have time for one thing this month, do this:

  1. Read 2 admitted-student essays from Pomona (search official admissions site or Reddit r/pomona). Notice the level of specificity — that's the bar.
  2. Write the ‘why this school’ supplement first, before anything else. If you can't fill 250 words with school-specific reasons, pick a different school.
  3. Find one current student to ask about their experience — admissions offices often connect prospective applicants with current students. The follow-up email becomes specific essay material.
