Macalester prefers globally minded, civically engaged students who will contribute to its diverse international community and active campus politics. They weight demonstrated commitment to social justice, cross-cultural experience, and collaborative leadership, sometimes placing more emphasis on meaningful extracurricular depth and public-facing impact than on extracurricular breadth. Test-optional context or nontraditional transcripts can be acceptable, but academic rigor in coursework and clear intellectual curiosity in chosen fields (especially economics, political science, or biology) are important for competitive applicants.
Tie your "why Macalester" essay to specific programs and on-campus opportunities, for example the Institute for Global Citizenship, the St. Paul community partnerships, study abroad options, or faculty in Macalester’s economics/political science departments. Show how your past international or community work will plug into particular classes, research, internships, or student organizations, and mention at least one concrete course, professor, or Minneapolis-Saint Paul partner to prove you researched the college.
