What Davidson weights most

Davidson favors academically driven students who will thrive within a rigorous liberal arts curriculum and the Honor Code community, especially those pursuing STEM or pre-med tracks but who also show genuine intellectual curiosity outside their major. They value demonstrated academic risk-taking, sustained leadership or depth in one or two extracurriculars, and clear fit with a close-knit, residential campus and varsity/club athletics culture; compared with peer LACs they are stricter about academic seriousness and integrity but somewhat more flexible on legacy/wealth factors.

Supplemental essay strategy

For the supplemental "Why Davidson" or community-fit essays, cite specific programs and on-campus life that you would use, for example the Honor Code in practice, the Davidson Fellows, the Center for Civic Engagement, the Johnson Family Fellows or Davidson’s undergraduate research opportunities, and particular professors or courses you checked. Explain how you will contribute to classroom discussion, close residential life, or team/club athletics, and avoid vague praise or generic claims about "small classes" without tying them to concrete Davidson offerings.

Where to focus next

If you only have time for one thing this month, do this:

  1. Read 2 admitted-student essays from Davidson (search official admissions site or Reddit r/davidson). Notice the level of specificity — that's the bar.
  2. Write the ‘why this school’ supplement first, before anything else. If you can't fill 250 words with school-specific reasons, pick a different school.
  3. Find one current student to ask about their experience — admissions offices often connect prospective applicants with current students. The follow-up email becomes specific essay material.
