They weigh demonstrated major preparation and campus fit more than exotic extracurriculars, so applicants with strong coursework in relevant subjects, technical or creative portfolio evidence (for film/arts), or work/volunteer experience in education stand out. Compared with other CSUs they are slightly stricter on subject preparation for impacted majors but more forgiving on test scores and non-major activities.
For the CSU application personal insight or campus-specific prompt, name specific CSULB resources and programs you will use - e.g., the College of Engineering internship pipelines, the Film and Electronic Arts hands-on labs, or the Teacher Preparation Academies - and tie them to past projects or work you can continue there. If you apply to film or arts, reference a concrete portfolio or course (like production labs or Beach Cinema series); for business or engineering, cite relevant faculty, the Career Development Center internships, or local industry partnerships and explain how those align with your next 2-3 career steps.
