Cal State Long Beach weights demonstrated preparation for a specific major tied to career-ready programs, especially in engineering, business, film and education, and favors applicants with clear, concrete experience (portfolio for film, project or internship for engineering, teaching/service for education). They are more forgiving on lower test scores or non-competitive GPAs if a transcript shows upward trends, rigorous CSU/IB/AP coursework, or community college articulation; conversely they are stricter about course-for-major prerequisites and math/science rigor for STEM applicants. Local ties and California residency help but are not decisive; professional work experience or community engagement aligned to career goals is a plus.
Use the supplemental/why-us space to cite specific programs and facilities: name the Bob Cole Conservatory or Film and Electronic Arts production labs, the Engineering Center labs, or the College of Education partnerships with Long Beach Unified, and explain one concrete way you will use them (class, faculty, lab course, internship). For film applicants include a short note about your reel or projects and how CSULB resources will elevate them; for STEM students reference specific prerequisite courses and any planned transfer articulation or first-year lab sequence to show readiness.
