What Colgate weights most

Colgate favors academically rigorous students who have taken the top available courseload and show intellectual curiosity in humanities, social sciences, or economics, with clear demonstrated leadership in campus or local communities. They weight demonstrated fit with Colgate's residential, discussion-driven classroom culture and active campus life, so applicants who show sustained engagement (leadership in clubs, research, internships, or community projects) and strong writing stand out; they are stricter than many peers on curricular rigor and consistency of achievement, somewhat looser on single-test variability if grades and course selection are excellent.

Supplemental essay strategy

For Colgate supplements, connect specific academic features such as the Great Lakes/Upstate research opportunities, the Woodworth Fellows or specific PoliSci/econ seminars, and residential learning programs to your past work and what you want to do there, naming faculty, centers, or courses when possible. Also signal fit with Colgate's close-knit, Greek-influenced social scene by describing two concrete ways you would contribute to residential life or student organizations, rather than generic campus enthusiasm.

Where to focus next

If you only have time for one thing this month, do this:

  1. Read 2 admitted-student essays from Colgate (search official admissions site or Reddit r/colgate). Notice the level of specificity — that's the bar.
  2. Write the ‘why this school’ supplement first, before anything else. If you can't fill 250 words with school-specific reasons, pick a different school.
  3. Find one current student to ask about their experience — admissions offices often connect prospective applicants with current students. The follow-up email becomes specific essay material.
