Cal Poly prioritizes demonstrable, project-based experience and technical readiness over broad extracurricular breadth. They favor applicants who have completed hands-on engineering, architecture, ag, or design projects, internships, maker-space work, or rigorous STEM coursework (AP/IB/dual-enrollment) that show they can contribute immediately in studio and lab settings. Expect more weight on portfolio/experience and less on speculative leadership jargon; weaker standardized scores can be offset by concrete evidence of applied skills and sustained technical work.
For the Cal Poly "why us" or program-specific essays, cite specific labs, senior projects, the Learn by Doing Studio model, or faculty whose research aligns with your prior project work, and describe a 1-2 semester project you want to build there with concrete tools, spaces, and classes you will use. If applying to architecture, attach or reference a short portfolio; for engineering, name relevant shop facilities, Cal Poly's senior project sequence, and how your past hands-on work prepares you to start at day one.
